Visit the National Museum of American History.  Here you can see the iconic Star Spangled Banner to many other American treasures.  The Ruby Slippers that Judy Garland wore in The Wizard of Oz are also in a showcase.  There are also daily programs and hands on activities that you can get involved in.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is also free and is awe-inspiring.  It is made of black granite in the shape of a V.  The granite walls are inscribed with the 58,209 Americans who never returned from the war in Vietnam.

One of the most visited museums in the country, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, may be one of the best free things to do in Washington DC.  More than 75,000 people come every year to see the amazing garden and its sculptures.  It is within walking distance of the US Capitol and Washington Monument and would be a perfect place to start the day touring all the monuments in the National Mall.

You may want to visit the most beautiful church of modern times, the St. Mathew’s Cathedral.  The cathedral has been the center of many important events, such as the funeral of President John F. Kennedy.  Tours are free, but to get a tour you will need to make a call for an appointment.

You can see so many amazing things in Washington DC for little or no cost.  There are many free things to do in Washington DC that you will never run out of things to do.
